Buttermilk pie is a Southern classic with a smooth, tangy custard filling baked inside a flaky single-crust pastry shell. The filling uses simple pantry staples — buttermilk, eggs, butter, and sugar — and sets up firm enough to slice cleanly. It bakes in about 50 minutes and is best served at room temperature or slightly chilled.
1packpre-made pie crust9-inch, store-bought or homemade
Filling
1cupbuttermilkpreferably full-fat
½cupunsalted buttermelted and slightly cooled
1 ½cupsgranulated sugar
3large eggsat room temperature
2tablespoonsall-purpose flour
1teaspoonvanilla extractpure
¼teaspoonground nutmeg
¼teaspoonsalt
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out the pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch pie plate. Trim and crimp the edges decoratively, then set aside in the refrigerator to chill while you prepare the filling.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter and sugar until smooth and well-blended.
Add the eggs one at a time, whisking well after each addition, until fully incorporated and the mixture is becoming pale.
Sift in the flour, then add the buttermilk, vanilla extract, nutmeg, and salt. Mix until completely blended and smooth.
Pour the filling into the prepared, chilled pie crust. Use a spatula to smooth the top evenly.
Bake in the preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes, or until the filling is set and the top is golden brown. A slight jiggle in the center is fine, as it will firm up as it cools.
Allow the pie to cool to room temperature before serving, approximately 1 to 2 hours.

Notes
For a slightly tangy twist, add a tablespoon of lemon zest to the filling. To make this pie gluten-free, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free blend.
