Marble cake combines vanilla and chocolate batters in the same tin, then swirls them together just before baking to create the distinctive two-tone pattern inside. Rooted in traditional German home baking, it is straightforward to make and keeps well for several days. Expect about 1 hour and 15 minutes from mixing bowl to cooling rack.
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper
.In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition to incorporate them fully.
In another bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
Stir in the vanilla extract to the batter.
Remove one-third of the batter and place it into a separate bowl. Sift in the cocoa powder and mix until smooth and well incorporated.
Spoon the vanilla and chocolate batters alternately into the prepared cake pan. Using a skewer or a knife, swirl through the mixtures to create a marbled effect.
Bake for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes
For a richer chocolate flavor, consider adding a handful of chocolate chips to the chocolate batter.
If you prefer a lighter cake, substitute whole milk with buttermilk for added tenderness.
