This classic gingerbread cake is spiced with ginger, cinnamon, and cloves and bakes up moist and tender in about 40 minutes. It works well as a simple sheet cake dusted with powdered sugar or dressed up with cream cheese frosting for holiday gatherings.
Prepare the Oven and Cake Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan with butter or line it with parchment paper.
Mix Dry Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
Cream Butter and Sugar: In another bowl, cream the softened butter and brown sugar together until light and fluffy. This should take about 2 minutes.
Combine Wet Ingredients: Beat the egg into the butter-sugar mixture until fully incorporated, then mix in the molasses.
Blend Dry and Wet Mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the hot water, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan, smoothing the top with a spatula. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Cool and Serve: Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack. Serve warm or at room temperature, perhaps with a dusting of powdered sugar or a dollop of whipped cream.

Notes
For a spicier cake, consider adding a pinch of cloves or nutmeg to the dry ingredients.
