Ingredients

For the Dry Components:

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder preferably Dutch process
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt

For the Wet Components:

½ cup unsalted butter melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs room temperature
½ cup whole milk

For the Filling and Toppings:

1 cup fresh cherries pitted and halved
½ cup dark chocolate chips

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the skillet in the oven to heat as it preheats.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
In a separate bowl, whisk the melted butter with the vanilla extract. Add the eggs one at a time, beating until fully incorporated. Stir in the milk.
Combine the wet and dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be cautious not to overmix for a tender crumb.
Carefully remove the hot skillet from the oven. Lightly grease with butter or cooking spray. Pour the batter into the skillet, spreading evenly.
Distribute the cherries evenly on top of the batter, gently pressing them in. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the top.
Bake for 30-35 minutes until the edges are crisp and a toothpick comes out mostly clean with a few moist crumbs attached.

For an added depth of flavor, consider adding a tablespoon of instant coffee powder to the dry ingredients — this enhances the chocolate's richness.
If fresh cherries are unavailable, frozen ones can be used; simply thaw and pat them dry before using.
